FAQ's

Why should I employ at Landscape Architect?

  • If you have a medium to large garden, or a complex site such as a roof terrace or basement garden, a landscape architect can help you define a clear brief and create a cohesive vision.

  • As a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute (CMLI)—an internationally recognised qualification—my chartership reflects the highest standards of education, professional practice, and ongoing development.

  • A landscape architect can guide your project from initial consultation through concept design, planning, tendering, and ultimately to completion—ensuring a seamless and well-considered process throughout.

When should I employ at Landscape Architect?

  • It’s best to engage a landscape architect at the very beginning of your project. The masterplanning process takes a holistic view of your site—considering access, circulation, levels, views, and how the space will be used. These insights can even help inform the layout and design of your property.

  • We work collaboratively with architects and interior designers to ensure your home and garden are designed as one cohesive whole.

How long does it take to design and build a landscape?

  • This depends on the scale and complexity of the project.

  • If planning permission is required, there is typically a minimum 12-week determination period following submission. For projects that don’t require planning and involve minimal structural work, it is possible to progress from initial consultation to a completed garden within approximately one year.

Do I require planning?

  • Planning permission may be required if your property is located within a conservation area or national landscape (formerly Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty), is listed, or includes protected trees (TPOs).

  • Additionally, elements such as outbuildings, large structures, swimming pools, or sports courts will usually require approval.

  • Ecological considerations can also impact timelines, so it’s important to identify any required surveys early in the process.

How much will it cost?

  • Costs vary depending on the scale, complexity, and features included in your design.

  • As a guide, earthworks and water-related elements tend to be among the most expensive. Projects involving re-profiling land, basements, swimming pools, or water features can each exceed £100,000.

  • While landscaping costs per square metre may seem reasonable, they can add up quickly over larger areas. As a general benchmark, investing 10–15% of your property’s value into your garden is a good starting point for creating a high-quality, lasting space.

  • It’s also important to budget for ongoing maintenance to keep your garden looking its best.

Can I achieve a low maintenance garden that looks good?

  • Yes—thoughtful design and plant selection can significantly reduce maintenance requirements.

  • However, all gardens require some level of care, including irrigation and seasonal maintenance—typically in early spring and late summer.

  • Gardening can also be an incredibly rewarding and mindful activity, offering the opportunity to connect with nature and enjoy the wellbeing benefits of being outdoors.

How long will it take my garden to look good after planting?

  • Where budget allows, I aim to create an immediate impact.

  • This can be achieved through a balance of planting—either using larger quantities of smaller plants or incorporating semi-mature and mature trees for instant structure and presence.

  • Like a fine wine, a well-designed landscape will continue to improve with time—provided it is properly maintained.

What’s the best time of year to build my garden?

  • Timing is crucial when working with natural systems.

  • Tree planting: Best during the dormant season (November to March) for rootballed trees

  • Planting schemes: Ideally in spring or autumn, though container-grown plants offer more flexibility

  • Earthworks: Best carried out in dry conditions, especially on clay or chalk soils

  • If planting is required outside optimal periods, additional measures (such as irrigation and specialist planting methods) may be necessary.

  • Ecological constraints can also affect project timelines, so early planning is essential.
